Culicoides onderstepoortensis Fiedler 1951

Abstract

Culicoides onderstepoortensis Fiedler, 1951 (Fig. 12a, b) Chemical pigmentation (Fig. 12a). Light spots on a dark background. Pigment patterns with clearly defined boundaries. Light streak in the R-M crossvein area. Cell r2, including distal part of C vein, dark. Probably two interconnected, pale spots in the medial part of the wing, running along the M2 vein up to the m2 cell. Two light spots in the m1 cell; proximal one in the form of a longitudinal streak running over the M2 vein. Light spot covering the edge of the wing in the m2 cell. Two light spots in the cua1 cell joined at one point; one located under the CuA1 vein; second covering the edge of the wing. Bright strands along the M1 vein. Interference patterns (Fig. 12b). Dominant colours: yellow, pale orange. Structural colours in place of naturally occurring bright spots, yellow. Interference colours corresponding to the dark pigment on the wings in shades of navy blue and purple. Venation clearly marked, veins surrounded mainly by orange bands. Pigmentation pattern corresponds with WIP, except difference of light streak in the R-M crossvein area visible in pigmentation but not clearly marked in WIP.
