Integration and Evaluation of Hybrid RoF-VLC Network

Abstract

Radio over fiber with visible light communications (RoF-VLC) can be a pioneering technology to provide ubiquitous wireless access for indoor wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a new RoF-VLC system using 10km fiber and multiple LEDs for indoor VLC through simulation. Gray coded input sequence with either On-Off Keying (OOK) or 16 QAM-OFDM modulated was used for data transmission. Radio signals transmit 1.5 Gb/s and 2.5 Gb/s data using OOK and16 QAM-OFDM, respectively. The signal from the 10 km fiber is sent to an access point with red, green, blue and yellow (RGBY) LEDs each with ~50 MHz modulation bandwidth. Filters such as Gaussian, Bessel, Trapezoidal, and Rectangle are used to increase the modulation bandwidth of LEDs. The maximum data rates that can be achieved at the VLC receiver is 400 Mb/s and 3.2 Gb/s using OOK and 16QAM-OFDM, respectively. The effect of filters and beam convergence on BER is also measured in this paper. Beam convergence is important for short range applications. The results obtained using the RoF-Vlcproposed in this paper are better compared to the ones in previous works in this area.
