Une Contribution Archéologique À La Théorie Des Sciences Sociales Est-Elle Possible ? Aspects De La Controverse Entre Jean-Claude Passeron Et Jean-Claude Gardin

Abstract

Le problème de la définition et de la situation disciplinaires de l'archéologie est abordé à partir de la controverse ayant opposé, entre 1980 et 2009, l'archéologue Jean-Claude Gardin et le sociologue Jean-Claude Passeron. Ce cas permet d'étudier les rapports conceptuels effectifs (et non ceux souhaités ou prescrits) entre l'archéologie et les autres sciences. Les contrastes entre les positionnements déclarés par les deux acteurs et l'ancrage disciplinaire de leurs arguments sont examinés : là où le sociologue tire parti de sa formation philosophique, l'archéologue s'appuie avant tout sur ses travaux menés en sémiologie et en informatique. L'archéologie joue un rôle finalement mineur dans les arguments engagés. Cette controverse ne constitue donc pas un cas positif de circulation conceptuelle entre l'archéologie et les sciences sociales. Un angle mort du débat, relatif aux spécificités ontologiques des objets de l'archéologie, apparaît néanmoins comme une voie possible pour rendre effective cette circulation.
