A Consideration of Records Based on Chinese Historical Sources in the Annals of Empress Jingū Japanese Version

Abstract

(2025年暫定版)Please credit the author in one of the following formats (2025 provisional version): ・椎名+タイトル・椎名(裕)+タイトル・Hironobu Shiina + title・H.Shiina + title・Shiina Hironobu + title・Shiina + title ※発行年やDOIなどは、必要に応じて記載してください。Optionally, you may add the publication year, DOI, or other relevant information. The format of author credit may be subject to change in the future. Version update:A miscount in the reign duration of King Akaō (Baekje’s King Asin) was corrected. His reign from 392 to 405 CE had been mistakenly stated as “13 years,” and has now been corrected to “14 years.” This paper examines the diplomatic records in the Annals of Empress Jingū in the Nihon Shoki, analyzing their correspondence with official Chinese historical sources such as the Wei Zhi and Jin Shu. Particular attention is given to the absence of the death of Queen Himiko and the enthronement of Queen Iyo—events found in Chinese records but not in the Nihon Shoki. It is proposed that the editors of the Nihon Shoki may have assumed that the sources they consulted had already merged the records of multiple female rulers into a single figure known as Empress Jingū. The paper also explores the diplomatic relationship with Baekje, including the presentation of the Seven-branched Sword and the alignment with the Gwanggaeto Stele inscription. These observations support the possibility that foreign-related articles in the Nihon Shoki were arranged by mechanically matching Chinese records to Japanese events, without consideration of the double-year calendar system used in earlier periods.
