Abstract

Resumo Imerso em um longo estudo sobre a cultura popular brasileira, o escritor Mário de Andrade publicava, em 1928, duas de suas obras mais lidas: Macunaíma - o herói sem nenhum caráter e o Ensaio sobre música brasileira. Na segunda, ao se aprofundar em uma das questões sobre a rítmica, promete a seus leitores um livro sobre seu ponto central: “a síncopa, mais provavelmente importada de Portugal que da África (como de certo hei-de mostrar num livro futuro)”. Passa a integrar, assim, a série de projetos em música brasileira que o escritor não chegou a completar, sendo um irmão de projetos como Na pancada do ganzá (posteriormente organizado e publicado por Oneyda Alvarenga) e o Dicionário musical brasileiro (organizado e publicado por Oneyda Alvarenga e Flavia Toni). O livro sobre síncopa não chegou a ser organizado para publicação e sobreviveu apenas como um conjunto de notas manuscritas sobre o assunto. O presente artigo trata de uma análise do conjunto desse manuscrito inédito, que hoje está no Arquivo Mário de Andrade do Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros, IEB-USP.
