DANES 2024: Book of Abstracts

Abstract

This volume publishes the abstracts for the talks, posters, and workshops of the DANES 2024 conference. The digital revolution has fundamentally transformed how we study, preserve, and understand the ancient world. As we navigate this transformation, the growing scholarly community of Digital Ancient Near Eastern Studies (DANES) stands at a crucial intersection between hermeneutic humanities scholarship and data-driven computational methods. The second DANES conference continues to bring together an international cohort of researchers who are pioneering new approaches to ancient world studies through digital and computational technologies. This year’s theme particularly highlights the emergence of sustainable digital infrastructures that enable both innovative analyses and preservation of cultural heritage objects. The conference presents both a snapshot of current developments in digital ancient Near Eastern studies and a roadmap for future directions. The diversity of approaches and applications suggests that we are only beginning to realize the potential of digital documentation and computational analyses in advancing our understanding of the ancient Near East. The virtual format of the conference itself reflects the increasingly interconnected and collaborative nature of modern scholarship, enabling participation from researchers across multiple continents and time zones. This accessibility aligns with the broader goals of the DANES network to foster an inclusive community of practitioners and to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and methodologies across disciplinary boundaries and expertise.
