
ABSTRCT Migration was considered as the movement of people from one geographical region to another. Rural to urban migration is a continuous concern in the study area. Therefore, this study assessed the causes and consequences of rural to urban migration of working-age group migrating in the Tora town, Silte Zone, Central Ethiopia. To achieve the objective of the study, descriptive research design with mixed research approach was applied. To select representative number of sample respondents through purposive sampling technique was adopted. The data collected through questionnaire was entered and analyzed with help of SPSS software version20.Descriptive statistics analysis was used, such as frequency, percentage, table and figures were used to summarize the study variables. The data collected through, interview, FGD was analyzed qualitative using narration to triangulate the quantitative results. The findings of the study showed that the major push factors of migration in to urban area were, 153(72.2%) of the respondent was better infrastructure for 73(34.76%) was job opportunity for 52(24.5%) was accesses to education for 34(16.04%) of the migrant population questioned lived in luxury life were found to migrate. Concerning the major push factors of migration rural to urban were, 73(34.4%) of the respondent was poverty landlessness for 52(24.5%) was drought, famine and crop failure for 43(20.3%) was to be free from dispute for 44(20.8 %) was losing ownership of land. Rural to urban migration has positive and negative consequences. The major factors of the rural to urban working age group migration in the Tora town were the expansion of the informal sector, increased living expenses, strain on social services, housing, and rising rates of urban unemployment. The researcher concluded that the major contribute for migrants to migrate from rural to urban area is push factors and recommended for the local, regional, and federal governments focus on providing social services and amenities in rural areas, creating jobs and reducing unemployment by effectively manage their land.
