Das hohe Alter allein wird oft als Kontraindikation für dentale Implantate angesehen. Multimorbiden geriatrischen Patienten werden die Vorzüge einer Implantation verwehrt, obwohl sie oft aufgrund ihres allgemeinmedizinischen Gesundheitszustands einen besonders hohen Zugewinn an mundbezogener Lebensqualität hätten. Die häufigen Erkrankungen des Alters, wie Diabetes, Bluthochdruck, Osteoporose, Parkinson, Apoplex – um nur einige zu nennen – stellen nicht grundsätzlich eine Kontraindikation dar, vorausgesetzt, dass sie unter guter ärztlicher Kontrolle sind. Aufgrund der Möglichkeit, dass sich allgemeinmedizinisch schnell etwas verändern kann, ist jedoch eine engmaschige Nachsorge notwendig. Der Zahnersatz sollte stabil gefertigt sein, sodass eine einfache Ein- und Ausgliederung sowie Abänderung möglich sind. Die Implantatkonstruktion sollte einer Reinigung durch den Senior selbst oder durch eine Pflegekraft leicht zugänglich sein.
