This paper presents the results of a head positioning experiment conducted with the aim of submicron track-width recording. It was confirmed that the high-Bs and small-gap head can provide uniform and precise servo pattern. By combining with an experimental HDD which employed a 1 /spl mu/m track-width GMR head and a fluid-bearing spindle motor and a narrow track-width servo writing, position error signal of about 47 nm was attained for 18 kTPI recording. This result convinced us of the feasibility of submicron track HDDs.
