Summary A seasonal analysis of cytokinin-like activity in the leaves, roots and corms of Hypoxis rooperi S. Moore was undertaken. In young expanding leaves low levels of non-polar cytokinins which co-chromatographed with zeatin and ribosylzeatin, were detected. As the leaves matured, an accumulation of these cytokinin compounds occurred. These results indicate that changes in the cytokinin-like activity in geophyte leaves during leaf growth and maturation, follow a similar pattern to that which occurs in deciduous and evergreen trees and annual plants. However, as the months unfavourable for growth approached (winter) and the leaves senesced, a marked decline in their cytokinin levels occurred. In the corms cytokinin-like activity was present throughout the investigation. Prior to the resumption of visible growth the cytokinin levels of these organs increased. Once growth had commenced the cytokinin levels decreased markedly. Qualitative changes were also detected in the corms at this time. This decrease led to a situation where after the breaking of dormancy low levels of cytokinin were detected in all the organs analysed. From this finding it would appear as if the cytokinins are rapidly utilized and/or metabolized during the resumption of vegetative growth and with the onset of flowering.
