Abstract

Mohamed ben ‘Abd el-Krim naquit vers 1882 chez les Ait Khattab, fraction des Beni Ouriaghel, une des tribus berberes les plus puissantes, les plus belliqueuses et les plus independantes du Rif central, ou sa famille possedait une forte influence. Apres de solides etudes traditionnelles a Ajdir, Tetouan et Fes, ‘Abd el-Krim s’installe dans le preside espagnol de Melilla ou il est, en 1906, redacteur du journal Telegrama del Rif. Secretaire du Bureau des affaires indigenes en 1907, cadi, puis cadi chef en 1914, sa collaboration avec les autorites espagnoles et ses differentes fonctions le familiarisent avec les methodes administratives. Ses contacts avec des milieux divers lui permettent de completer, par une riche information moderne, sa formation de lettre arabe. La Guerre du Rif (extrait de « Abd el Krim et la Republique du Rif »). Quittant l’administration espagnole, ‘Abd el-Krim se fixe en 1919 a Ajdir et commence, a partir de 1920, a soulever les Beni Ouriaghel contre l’Espagne. La politique de repression, qui suit l’intervention du general Sylvestre, multiplie les ralliements au chef rifain. Aide de son frere M’hamed, son conseiller politique, ‘Abd el-Krim remporte d’importants succes. La defaite espagnole d’Anoual, le 22 juin 1921, enflamme le Rif. Il renforce des lors son pouvoir. En peu de temps, il cree un Etat, avec un « makhzen » (gouvernement central) qui, encore assez rudimentaire, presente un melange de traits traditionnels et modernes. Ses ambitions augmentent [...]
