Abstract Controlled hydrolysis of SbCl 3 resulted in two well defined intermediate oxychlorides; SbOCl and Sb 4 O 5 Cl 2 . TG indicated that SbOCl decomposed rapidly at 530K to Sb 4 O 5 Cl 2 . Chemical analysis and XRD showed that the decomposition product was identical to Sb 4 O 5 Cl 2 produced by the hydrolysis of SbCl 3 . Complete hydrolysis of SbCl 3 and the thermal decomposition of intermediate oxychlorides both gave Sb 2 O 3 ; the product of hydrolysis was shown by XRD to be valentite, whilst that obtained by thermal decomposition was senarmontite. Our findings have been related to the synergistic effect of Sb 2 O 3 , a flame retardant additive, in conjunction with chlorinated hydrocarbons.
