Abstract In a changing context in the Middle East, the Syrian regime is in a difficult situation. Should the regime fall, and considering the trend of other Arab countries, political Islam will play a key role in the formation of the new government. This, in turn, could result in a redefinition of the formerly complex relationships between Islamist groups in the area. This article focuses on the contradictions inherent to these relationships through the study of the negotiations between the Syrian regime and the Muslim Brotherhood whose aim was the return of the latter to Syria, and the study of the mediation that their counterparts in other countries have carried out.
