An investigation was made of 50-cycle discharges in which the gas current showed a marked tendency to flow in only one direction with respect to the axial magnetic field. This showed that the dischange behaved as a rectifier, and over a smail pressure range centered at 0.5 x 10/sup -3/ mm Hg complete rectification occurred. A transverse component of the axial magnetic field caused by the method used to connect the axial field coil system was found to be the cause of the rectification. (M.C.G.)
