Abstract

Este proyecto es continuación del proyecto E011. Aproximadamente dos kilómetros del noreste de la población de Tepexi de Rodríguez, unos 90 Km. al sur de la ciudad de Puebla, se localiza la cantera Tlayúa donde desde 1981 el Instituto de Geología de la UNAM realiza investigación paleontológica enfocada al conocimiento y protección de este importante patrimonio nacional que data de hace más de 110 millones de años. La relevancia de la cantera Tlayúa radica en la perfecta preservación de sus fósiles y en la enorme biodiversidad que presenta y hasta el momento alcanza más de 200 taxa, entre invertebrados y vertebrados. Para propiciar la recuperación y resguardo del material paleontológico de la cantera Tlayúa y sistematizar la información contenida en la colección paleontológica del Instituto de Geología, la CONABIO apoyó este proyecto cuyo resultado último, en la forma de una base de datos con información de 3,260 ejemplares de 1,423 especies, puede servir como modelo para la sistematización de otras colecciones paleontológicas.
