Abstract

La colección originalmente perteneció al INDERENA (Instituto Nacional de los Recursos Naturales Renovables y del Medio Ambiente), y posteriormente pasó, junto con las demás colecciones existentes en esa institución, al Instituto Humboldt cuando este fue creado por ley en 1993. Estas colecciones fueron transportadas en 1995 desde Bogotá hasta Villa de Leyva – Boyacá, a la casa de la Real Fabrica de Licores, en donde momentáneamente funciono el Instituto; y posteriormente, en 1996, al Claustro de San Agustín una vez fue restaurado, en donde residen actualmente. La Colección Ornitológica del Instituto Alexander von Humboldt fue fundada en 1971 por Jorge Ignacio Hernández Camacho, y sus primeros especímenes depositados desde finales de los años 1960s, fueron catalogados en marzo de 1973. Actualmente, la colección cuenta con 17303 especímenes catalogados de 1.273 especies, que representan el 67% del total de especies registradas para Colombia. Si bien el espécimen más antiguo es de 1907, la mayoría corresponden a recolectas desde 1940 a la actualidad.
