Abstract

The article is devoted to the identification of methodological grounds for the study of the philosophy of Archbishop Nikanor (Brovkovich). The main problem is the definition of the goal that Archbishop Nikanor has set for himself starting to write his philosophical texts. The article reveals that the main semantic context of his philosophy is the contradiction between progress and Christianity in modern society. It is this context that is proposed to be considered as something that objectively forced the philosopher to look for the solution of metaphysical questions. In turn, in order to understand the peculiarities of the perception of the progress by Archbishop Nikanor, the article proposes to refer to the «compensatory» theory of modernity, proposed by J. Ritter and developed by G. Lubbe. As a result of the correlation of this concept with the assessments of the interaction of progress and Christianity in the Archbishop Nikanor’s philosophy is determined that the purpose of his philosophy was to justify the fact that in the formally secular, progressive modern society is a need for Christianity.
