Shalya tantra therapy was popular in ancient times since it gave quick relief when compared to other methods. Sushruta is credited with upgrading the art of surgery to one of the most prestigious areas of medicine. Shalya Chikitsa was the favoured approach for conditions that required prompt treatment. Sushruta elevated surgery in mediaeval India to a new level, and the period became known as "The Golden Age of Surgery" in ancient India.
