UNA INCURSIÓN EN LA CIÉNAGA DE GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ: el proyecto de adaptación de La Casa Grande de Álvaro Cépeda por Luis Alcoriza

Abstract

Alvaro Cepeda Abstract The relationship between the exiled Spanish-Mexican Luis Alcoriza and Gabriel García Márquez was very fruitful considering the cinematic interest of the Colombian writer, above all in the period just prior to the writing of One Hundred Years of Solitude, during which the script of Presagio was written. After his successful masterpiece, when García Márquez was residing in Barcelona, both writers kept up an interesting correspondence regarding the adaptation of La casa grande, a novel written by his very close friend and member of the ‘Barranquilla group’, Alvaro Cepeda Samudio. The novel focused on the 1928 repression of the United Fruit Company workers by the Colombian Army in the location of Ciénaga, just a few miles from Aracataca. This unpublished correspondence reveals Alcoriza’s attempt to reconstruct the García Márquez’s original world, the importance of his childhood memories in the formation of his imaginary world, in addition to other eloquent considerations of his personal and creative life, emerging from his international success brought by One Hundred Years of Solitude.
