The Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra: New Actors in Lebanon?

Abstract

In Lebanon from a historical perspective there has been a social context which helped the emergence and development of Sunni jihadism, but it was a current too weak to challenge the status quo. However, the Syrian civil war has modified the existing balance of power, putting Hezbollah on the defensive and weakening the Future Movement´s Sunni leadership. This has allowed the Lebanese jihadists to cooperate with the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, which perceive the Lebanese crisis as a continuation of the Syrian war. This is why they are adopting a new main role in the neighbouring country in order to spread violence and overstretch Lebanese army and Hezbollah´s military capabilities
