Abstract

Xa sexa movidos pola curiosidade, pola notoriedade dun determinado lugar, polo seu valor histórico, etc., ou polo morbo, o feito é que desde tempos inmemoriais a dor, o dó, a morte, a desigualdade, a fame e así unha longa lista de feitos dolorosos foron susceptibles de ser mercantilizados e comercializados no mercado turístico. Algunhas catástrofes recentes dan boa mostra diso: é o caso dos ataques terroristas do 11S en Nova York, do furacán Katrina en Nova Orleáns, do tsunami que asolou o sueste asiático ou do vertido do petróleo do Prestige. Estes catro casos difiren na natureza da catástrofe, irrelevante para o noso obxecto de estudo e, en cambio, resultan comparables polo seu carácter coetáneo, polo elevado impacto que tiveron na opinión pública debido ao intenso seguimento por parte dos medios de comunicación e, por suposto, pola afectación da actividade turística. Como resultado obsérvase que o contexto resulta crucial para explicar a explotación da catástrofe e, en particular, o grao de destrución da infraestrutura turística, a dependencia do turismo que teña o destino e o impacto na afluencia de visitantes. Ademais, constátase que, no caso da Costa da Morte, fronte ás connotacións eticamente negativas do turismo escuro, presenta aspectos positivos como a chegada de voluntarios durante os meses seguintes á catástrofe, o que constitúe un dos factores explicativos do crecemento das pernoitas na zona
