Abstract

Dit literatuuroverzicht beschrijft klinische en onderzoeksaspecten van een in de taal en spraakpathologie stiefmoederlijk bedeelde spraakstoornis: het Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS). FAS wordt gedefi nieerd als een neurogene spraakstoornis, gekenmerkt door afwijkingen in intonatie, ritme en klemtoon en afwijkingen in timing, plaats en manier van articulatie, maar met behoud van vloeiendheid en verstaanbaarheid. Er blijkt echter slechts geringe consensus over klinische classifi catie en diagnostische kenmerken. Het artikel geeft naast deze klinische discussie een overzicht van onderzoek naar fonetische kenmerken, differentiaal diagnostiek ten opzichte van andere neurogene taal- en spraakstoornissen (afasie, spraakdyspraxie en dysartrie), van theorieën over onderliggende defecten in de psycholinguïstische en –motorische productiemechanismen, en van neurologisch onderzoek naar de oorzaken van FAS. Een diagnostische markeerder dient zich niet aan en een eenduidige interpretatie van de onderliggende defecten blijkt vooralsnog niet mogelijk, zodat de positionering van FAS in de taxonomie van taal- en spraakstoornissen nog onduidelijk blijft.
