Abstract

O vírus Ébola causa uma doença hemorrágica grave com alta taxa de letalidade. Foi descoberto em 1976 no Zaire e foi responsável por alguns surtos em África sendo o mais grave o surto de 2014. Os morcegos da fruta são os hospedeiros do vírus e a sua transmissão é feita pelo contacto direto com sangue, secreções ou fluídos de pessoas portadoras do vírus bem como pela ingestão e contacto direto de animais infetados. A doença pode apresentar sinais e sintomas até 21 dias após a sua exposição sendo os primeiros sintomas a febre, dores musculares, dor de garganta e de cabeça, seguido por vómitos, diarreias, disfunção renal, disfunção hepática e nos casos mais graves hemorragias. A hidratação oral ou com fluídos via intravenosa melhora a sobrevida dos pacientes. Existem uma variedade de potenciais tratamentos para a doença e este ano, em 2015, uma vacina é destacada pelos bons resultados, a rVSV-EBOV. Os surtos provocados pelo vírus Ébola podem ser prevenidos se houver informação para tal existindo então medidas preventivas, tais como evitar o contacto com animais infetados, com pessoas infetadas, ter boas práticas de higiene e evitar o contacto com objetos que possam ter tido contacto com sangue ou fluídos contaminados.
