Abstract

The balance and fear of falling are two factors that have been described as being interrelated, which affect the quality of life of elderly individuals. The aim of this study is to compare the state of balance and fear of falling among the elderly institutionalized and non-institutionalized population, in which were evaluated 30 institutionalized and 30 non-institutionalized. The instruments used were the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Tinetti Test (POMA I) and the Falls Efficacy Scale (FES). Having been found statistically significant differences between the results of all tests obtained for the institutionalized population and noninstitutionalized: POMA static balance (p=0,000), POMA dynamic balance (p=0,000) and FES (p=0,000). It was concluded that non-institutionalized individuals have more beneficial values than the institutionalized individuals.
