Acid-base balance.

Authors: R A, Harrison;

Acid-base balance.

Abstract

This article emphasizes the interactions between the respiratory and metabolic sources of acid and their clearance. It includes the chemistry of acid-based balance as expressed by the Henderson-Hasselbach equation, the principles and importance of biologic buffering systems, and a brief review of renal regulation of acid-based balance. Finally, the reader is given a set of guidelines for a systematic approach to the analysis of acid-base data.
