Using a psychoanalytic model to approach acts of self-harm.

Recent changes in health service policy mean that nurses working in out-patient settings are probably seeing more people with severe mental health needs. When the person is threatening to commit an act of self-harm, the nurse can be under great pressure to take decisive action. In this paper, Marcus Evans draws on findings from the field of psychoanalysis to offer nurses some guidance on working in this increasingly common area of practice.
