A close relationship has been established between the production of extracellular and intracellular lipids and polysaccharides by Rhodotorula glutinis. Their synthesis depended on the pH of the medium. The composition and dynamics of polyol content in the cells, and the presence of acids typical of exolipids in the composition of intracellular lipids under certain conditions, suggest that the components of extracellular lipids are synthesized within the yeast cell.
