Ludwig van Beethoven died in 1827, aged 57 years. During the last 30 years of his life he suffered a progressive bilateral hearing loss, which left him profoundly deaf during his -later years. The possible causes of this deafness, the subject of much conjecture, are discussed.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 1585 (1974)
