[Experience of a pulmonary embolism response team].

Abstract

The management of pulmonary embolism (PE) requires a complex approach. To organize and improve the efficiency of care between different medical specialties, the Pulmonary Embolism Rapid Response Team (PERT) was developed. The aim is to describe the experience of the PERT team at the British Hospital.Retrospective, observational study. Data were collected from patients diagnosed with PE from October 2021 to October 2024. The analysis included those who required team activation.There were 64 PERT team activations due to PE. 53% corresponded to high intermediate-risk PE, 22% high-risk, 22% low intermediate-risk, and 3% lowrisk. 47% were treated only with anticoagulation. The 50% received other therapies, 25% required IVC filter placement, 34% systemic thrombolytics and 34% were managed by the interventional cardiology team, 7% received both systemic and local fibrinolytics. The 30-day mortality rate for PE was 3%. There were 7 hemorrhagic complications. The discharge medication was 28% direct oral anticoagulants, 21% enoxaparin, and 49% vitamin K antagonists. Two percent did not receive anticoagulation due to contraindications.We present the initial results obtained by our PERT team, with the aim of collecting data and thus guiding future attention to these complex cases. There are currently some works that demonstrate that the actions of these teams managed to reduce mortality.
