Anne Poole, Chief Nursing Officer at the Department of Health and Social Security, welcomed delegates and in her opening speech remarked on the significance of nostalgia in the National Health Service. 'Attention is rapidly focussed on the past,' she sad. We assume that everything was done better then, which was not always the case. She said that peoples' expectations have risen and they had come to expect a high quality of care.
