Abstract

Un comportement sédentaire est défini formellement comme une situation d’éveil caractérisée par une dépense énergétique ≤ 1,5 équivalents métaboliques en position assise ou allongée.Les dernières données épidémiologiques rapportent qu’en Amérique du Nord et en Europe, les citoyens passent entre 8 et 11 heures assis par jour. Les comportements sédentaires et d’activité physique peuvent coexister chez un même individu. Il est en effet possible de passer beaucoup de temps assis chaque jour tout en respectant les recommandations en matière d’activité physique régulière. Les effets néfastes des comportements sédentaires sur différents indicateurs de santé s’exercent même lorsque les individus sont actifs physiquement. Les altérations physiologiques liées aux comportements sédentaires seraient principalement d’ordre métabolique. Interrompre régulièrement ses comportements sédentaires a des effets favorables sur la santé, indépendamment du temps total passé assis. De nombreuses perspectives d’interventions pour réduire la sédentarité des Français sont à imaginer. Certains pays ont déjà lancé des programmes de prévention à grande échelle sur des publics cibles.

Sedentary behaviors refer to any waking activity characterized by an energy expenditure ≤ 1.5 metabolic equivalent and a sitting or lying posture. Recent epidemiological data reported that in North America and Europe, citizens spend between 8 and 11 hours sitting per day. Sedentary behaviors and physical activity can coexist in the same person. It is possible to spend a lot of time sitting each day while completing recommendations for regular physical activity. Adverse health effects of sedentary behaviors are in part independent of the physical activity level. The physiological implications associated with sedentary behaviors are mainly metabolic. Regulary interrupting the sedentary behavior has favorable effects on health, regardless the total time spent sitting. Many interventional perspectives for reducing sedentary behaviors in France can be envisaged. Some countries have already launched interesting large-scale prevention programs.
