Abstract

The article examines the evolution of royal coats of arms and of the kingdom in a historical sequence from the Middle Ages to the end of the Ancien Régime. Special emphasis is placed on the period following the incorporation of Navarre into the Spanish monarchy, marked by the kingdom’s interest in being respected and recognised by the other elements of the monarchy, in a similar process to that following by other peripheral territories on the Spanish mainland and in Italy. During the Bourbon phase there is a gradually fall in interest in being connected to the royal coat of arms –indeed, there are very few images of them in the kingdom- although this does not mean the rupture of relations with the monarchy, shown in the galleries of official portraits conserved in public institutions. This is a sign of the changes in the base of royal power and the relationship between the monarchy and the different kingdoms.
