Abstract

La evaluación de la composición corporal de un individuo (en particular, sus reservas de proteínas musculares, grasa y agua totales) es de interés en la práctica clínica, no sólo porque se obtienen datos indicadores de su estado nutricional en una fecha determinada, sino porque al realizar periódicamente dicha evaluación durante el transcurso de un tratamiento terapéutico se verifica la eficacia del tratamiento que se le está administrando. La antropometría física es una disciplina científica que tiene por objeto caracterizar el cuerpo humano realizando medidas físicas de los tejidos óseo, muscular y adiposo. Algunas de las medidas son estimadores directos (peso, talla o determinadas circunferencias) mientras que otras son estimadores indirectos (pliegues cutáneos, etc.). Los valores obtenidos en las mediciones se comparan con las referencias específicas de un grupo poblacional (niños, adultos, ancianos, etc.). Aunque las mediciones antropométricas son relativamente fáciles de llevar a cabo y requieren equipos simples, resulta conveniente familiarizarse con sus procedimientos con el fin de adquirir una adecuada competencia clínica.
