Dieta vegana-vegetariana en la edad infantil. Estado de la cuestión

Abstract

Objective: To carry out a bibliographic search to know the benefits and shortcomings of a vegan-vegetarian diet in childhood. Methods: A bibliographic search has been carried out in the sources of scientific data between the years 2010-2020. Results: Nutritional requirements in childhood can be met with a balanced vegan diet, which is beneficial for the reduction of mortality, non-communicable diseases such as metabolic syndrome and the appearance of some types of cancer. The possible deficits that could exist in this type of diet would be that of proteins, fatty acids, iron, calcium, zinc, iodine, vitamin D and vitamin B12. An adequate combination of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and their derivatives, nuts, seeds, and regular exposure to the sun can achieve all nutritional requirements, except those of vitamin B12, which would require supplementation during all stages of life. Conclusions: The well-planned vegan and vegetarian diet is healthy at school age, but it is important that there is good control of the macronutrients and micronutrients necessary for proper development in the infant stage.
