Abstract

Immigrants who arrive late to a different school system must face a problem of adaptation in the host educational culture. Besides, when they cannot speak the school language, problems get aggravated. Among the needs of this kind of students, there is the learning process of the language through which the contents of the curricular subjects are taught, the academic language. In this line, it has been carried out a didactic intervention that includes a series of didactic sequences. These sequences aim to help these young immigrant learners of our educational system so that they are able to develop specific academic exercises. Therefore, academic vocabulary has been introduced along four didactic sequences. This vocabulary has been selected because of its suitability for solving functions and tasks from the different subjects, such as to analyze, classify, or locate. The current research has focused on the comprehension and interest of the exercises in order to improve their development. Thus, this proposal has included various lexical learning strategies, such as the contextualization of vocabulary by means of cards of vocabulary, or the use of graphic organizers. The results have shown improvements in our students regarding their capacity for resolving problems and also regarding their attitude towards the exercises.
