Abstract

Mi intención en el presente trabajo es justificar la presencia de la figura del valido en el siglo XVII y dentro de la Corona hispánica , centrándome en dos personajes de la relevancia del Duque de Lerma y el Conde Duque de Olivares, que asieron el timón de la gobernación durante casi medio siglo en los reinados de Felipe III y IV de la casa de los Austrias. Con independencia de un análisis simplista que sitúa la aparición e influencia de los privados motivados por la fuerte personalidad de los mismos y la debilidad de carácter y juventud de los monarcas , analizaremos su protagonismo como un resultado lógico en la evolución de un aparato administrativo pesado, lento, con multitud de Consejos, afecto a las trabas impuestas por una Nobleza que acaparaba los puestos más relevantes , y que debía gestionar complejas políticas de orden interno , y conflictivas de orden exterior , en un contexto de agresividad y expansión de otras potencias que buscaban el liderazgo comercial y económico , así como convertirse en potencias de primer orden , desplazando a la monarquía universal dominante a nivel global durante el sigo precedente a un lugar secundario.
