The purpose of this work is to propose a new analytical descriptive system for silica phytoliths. Other classification systems have been proposed and used in the past, especially in United States. However, those systems offered several disadvantages when applied in the Mediterranean area, like their lack of uniformity and the fact that they were mainly especially based on the study of plants from the american continent.
