Restos humanos en los campos de batalla

Abstract

En todas las guerras de todos los tiempos los cuerpos de los combatientes muertos han quedado extendidos en el campo de batalla. La primera vez que se documenta que eran enterrados y no dejados a la intemperie fue en la Guerra de la Independencia de Estados Unidos (1976-1783) y en las guerras napoleónicas en Europa (1803-1815), cuando las víctimas militares fueron sepultadas en grandes fosas comunes en el mismo lugar en el que habían caído. Inicialmente las excavaba el ejército vencedor, después de que los muertos sufriesen el pillaje de ropas, utensilios, botas, armamento, correaje… Y era entonces cuando una vez desvalijados eran enterrados en fosas comunes, si no por el ejército enemigo, por vecinos de la zona, que buscaban economizar espacio y fuerza de trabajo.
