El bestiar transformava l'energia fixada per les plantes en proteïnes i greixos per al consum humà -aliments i il·lurninació- en adobs naturals; en matèries primeres per a la indústria -fibres i cuir-, o en força mecànica que l'home emprava per llaurar, moure els molins o pel tragí.
