La Codorniz común es un ave galliforme perteneciente a la familia Phasianidae y subfamilia Phasianinae. La Codorniz común fue descrita como Tetrao coturnix por el naturalista sueco Carl Nilsson Linnaeus en 1758, en la décima edición de su Systema naturae. Sin embargo, en 1764 fue trasladada por François Alexandre Pierre de Garsault al género Coturnix, creado por este zoólogo francés.
