Abstract

[eng] The Chilean penitentiary system presents serious violations of the dignity and human rights of people deprived of liberty. Among these issues, the overcrowding and lack of privacy in facilities stand out. This negatively affects inmates, their families, staff, the overall prison environment, and ultimately the entire society. The present work is framed in this context and aims to design an intervention program based on writing workshops to promote well-being of individuals deprived of liberty who are in overcrowded and privacy-lacking conditions in Chilean penitentiary centers. Specifically, a pilot project is proposed at the Penitentiary Compliance Center in the city of Copiapó, a facility leading in overcrowding rates. Through a 12-session group writing workshop, it is expected to reduce stress levels, promote emotional release and self-evaluation of the participants, as well as facilitate protected communication and their autonomy. This intervention sets a precedent in Chile, as there is no systematic documentation or evaluation of a similar program in prison contexts. Therefore, through the implementation of “Entre Líneas” and its process and outcome evaluation, it is hoped to lay the foundation for research and intervention in these little explored areas.
