Joris-Karl Huysmans: hacia lo sublime

Authors: García Gelabert, Ricard;

Joris-Karl Huysmans: hacia lo sublime

Abstract

[eng] This work aims to examine the relationship between the late literary creation of J.-K. Huysmans and a large philosophical corpus that has studied the sublime directly or indirectly, from Longinus to Nietzsche, trying to establish links and connections between the fin-de-siècle illness par excellence (ennui or spleen) and the pretension of an elevated plane that the weakness of the prevailing materialism, in its own vulgar and democratizing condition, prevents this elite of high or sensitive spirits. Starting from different premises that surround the issue at hand (among them representation and mimesis, the encounter with the dark or sinister or the unassailable cruelty of the natural world in stark contrast to the domestication of the imitated), a perspective of the triumph of the spirit over matter is articulated, an issue which was axial to an author whose artistic worldview pursued himself intimately on a personal level. Keywords: melancholy, literature, ennui, sinister, philosophy, alchemy
