Abstract

[eng] The diet plays a key role in health and in disease, and it seems to be due, in part, to gut microbiota-dependent mechanisms. The human gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of diverse microbial communities that interact and compete for nutrients contained in the diet. There are several factors that influence the modulation of gut microbiota composition, of which the most relevant are the dietary habits. It's necessary to understand the link between diet and gut microbiota to try to control and/or prevent chronic non-communicable diseases. The vegan diet includes foods rich in dietary fiber, polyphenols, unsaturated fatty acids, plant-based protein and micronutrients, which may have beneficial effects on human health by promoting the diversity and functionality of the gut microbiota and stimulating the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). However, if the diet is not properly planned, there is a risk of various nutritional deficiencies. The aim of the present review is to provide an update of existing knowledge on the effect of the vegan diet on the composition of the human gut microbiota, and subsequently to compare the impact caused by other types of diets.
