Abstract

La por és una emoció bàsica, imprescindible per a la supervivència. Davant d'una amenaça, activa de manera gairebé instantània tota una sèrie de mecanismes fisiològics i cerebrals que ens permeten fugir o amagar-nos per protegir-nos-en. Tanmateix, un excés de por pot ser clarament perjudicial, com passa en les persones que tenen ansietat, angoixa o atacs de pànic. També pot ser contraproduent no tenir-ne, atès que llavors pot passar que s'assumeixin massa riscos innecessaris. ¿Com ho fa el cervell per trobar un balanç adequat que sigui útil? Aquesta és la pregunta que s'han fet la neurobiòloga Nadine Gogolla i els seus col·laboradors, de l'institut de recerca Max Planck d'Alemanya. Segons han publicat a la revista Science, el truc d'una bona regulació emocional de la por es troba en una regió del cervell anomenada ínsula, que integra l'anticipació que fa el mateix cervell de les possibles amenaces futures amb els senyals interns del cos, com per exemple el ritme cardíac. Les pulsacions per minut que es tenen abans d'una amenaça, per tant, condicionen la resposta de por que es generarà, la qual cosa justifica algunes de les tècniques que s'utilitzen per controlar l'ansietat, l'angoixa i els atacs de pànic.
