Abstract

[eng] At the threshold of the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Germanic general Flavius Ricimer would use his power and influence as a patrician and magister militum to enthrone and depose emperors at his will according to the needs that would arise in the government. This paper will address Ricimer's rise as a general, how did he obtain the authority that allowed him to take the reins of the Empire from the shadows, and, most importantly, how his jurisdiction and his actions affected the permanence of an Empire that was already at the gates of its disappearance.
