Estudio de la fauna malacológica (Gastropoda) del Plioceno del Empordà (Girona)

Abstract

Las motivaciones que nos indujeron a trabajar sobre el tema objeto de la presente tesis han sido de diversa índole; por otra parte, los estudios que existían sobre la fauna malacológica del Plioceno ampurdanés son bastante antiguos; son ALMERA y BOFILL, entre 1884 y 1907, los primeros que se refieren a estos ricos yacimientos de Moluscos estudiando su fauna, llegando a citar más de un centenar de Gasterópodos. Luego, no es hasta VILLALTA (1958) que se vuelve a hablar de este Plioceno, aunque dicho autor no hace un estudio de su fauna. Posteriormente, HABBERT (1966) hace un estudio de los Foraminíferos. En los últimos años se publicó un resumen de nuestra tesina de licenciatura, donde se estudiaba, preliminarmente, el yacimiento del cementerio de Ciurana (MARTINELL, 1973) y también se estudió el yacimiento de Ventalló (MARTINELL y PEDEMONTE, 1974). Últimamente, CARBONELL, DONVILLE et MAGNE (1974) dan algunos datos estratigráficos y paleoecológicos sobre este Plioceno. De esta manera, se creyó conveniente abordar el estudio sistemático de los Gasterópodos, lo cual comportaba: 1) una determinación actualizada de los mismos y una revisión de las especies; 2) una descriptiva detallada y previa de todas las especies; 3) una aplicación a los problemas paleontológicos –sobre todo, sistemáticos– de la estadística; y 4) centrar este estudio en una serie de aspectos paleobiológicos muy sugestivos, con los cuales están trabajando muchos paleontólogos en estos últimos años. Todo esto es lo que nos hemos propuesto dentro de este trabajo y pretendemos reflejar en el presente volumen.
