Abstract

[eng] When the War of Spanish Succession began, Philip V of Spain was in Barcelona with the double purpose of celebrating the Cortes and welcoming his wife, María Luisa Gabriela de Savoie. At the beginning of April 1702, the king embarked from the port of Barcelona bound for the kingdom of Naples, where he was solemnly received. He stayed there for a while, but soon departed for the battlefield. From Naples he went to Liorna and then to Milan. In the battle of Luzzara he stood out for his courage. But the insistent requests that came from Spain forced his return, in which he visited again Barcelona. This Mediterranean itinerary marked the beginning of the reign and had a great influence on the person of Philip V. He commissioned to his secretary, Antonio de Ubilla, to write the chronicle of everything that happened, as a testimony and celebration of the journey.
