El virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) es un virus ARN exógeno perteneciente a la familia Retroviridae subfamilia Lentivirinae, cuyos miembros se diferencian del resto de retrovirus por presentar un marcado poder citolítico. Estructuralmente, la partícula vírica (80-110 nm) se compone de un ARN (9,2 kb VIH-1; 9,6 kb VIH-2) monocatenario de polaridad(+) que presenta dos copias unidas por su extremo 5', constituido por 3 genes que codifican proteínas estructurales y 8 genes que codifican proteínas reguladoras.
