Abstract

Los servicios intensivos en conocimiento juegan un papel crucial en la creación y comercialización de nuevos productos, procesos y servicios. Resultan fundamentales como portadores, modeladores y creadores de innovación, tanto de naturaleza tecnológica como organizativa. Sin embargo, se conoce poco sobre los factores que explican cuáles son las razones por las que algunas empresas hacen más uso de tales servicios (asesoramiento tecnológico, investigación aplicada, consultoría estratégica e ingeniería, etc.). Este trabajo, a partir de una base de datos de más de 2.000 empresas, investiga sobre los factores que inciden en la utilización por parte de las PYMES de servicios intensivos en conocimiento. Las conclusiones más consistentes de los estudios disponibles indican que la utilización de servicios externos tiende a incrementarse a medida que aumenta la dimensión de las empresas usuarias. Igualmente se analizan otras variables clave como la edad de las empresas, la pertenencia sectorial, la localización, el nivel de innovación y la actividad exportadora.
