The gradual opening of the Soviet archives in the late 1980s leads the author of this article to write down a few considerations about the data provided by several documents belonging to the Communist International Archive. These records were written by the International Brigades commanders and show the kind of information given to the Komintern and also Stalin by the general Kleber, informer and military adviser; also by Vidal, commander of the International Brigades in Albacete; and finally by Andre Marty, responsible for the Spanish Republican Army staff. These papers show the troubles in matter of internal organization, disagreements among the International Brigades commanders and the propaganda released by Stalin of the solidarity of thousands of international volunteers who died in Spain fighting against Franco.
